Your DNA Contains Instructions Written by Ancient Viruses

About 8 percent of your DNA comes from retroviruses that infected your ancestors millions of years ago. These viral sequences, called human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs), got stuck in the genome and have been copied into every cell of your body ever since. Most of these ancient viral insertions are now inactive, essentially fossilized code that does nothing. But some have been repurposed. A few HERVs produce proteins that help form the placenta during pregnancy, a critical structure for fetal development. Without these viral leftovers, human reproduction would fail. This isn't contamination or a biological mistake. It's evidence that evolution works by layering new functions onto old biological machinery. The virus didn't disappear when it stopped being dangerous. Instead, the genome kept it, and over millions of years, the body found ways to use those sequences for its own survival. Scientists discovered this by comparing human DNA with other primates and finding the same viral sequences in roughly the same places. The closer the species, the more overlap. It's a molecular record of infections that happened before humans existed, written directly into our genetic code.
