
Venus Rotates Backwards and Slower Than It Orbits the Sun
Venus is genuinely strange. It rotates on its axis so slowly that a single day on Venus, measured from one sunrise to the next, actually takes 243 Earth days. That's longer than Venus's year, which is only 225 Earth days. So if you somehow lived on Venus, you would experience a year before you experienced a full day. But there's more. Venus rotates backwards relative to most planets in our solar system, a phenomenon called retrograde rotation. Scientists still aren't certain why. The leading theory involves a massive collision early in Venus's history that knocked it sideways, reversing its spin. Another possibility is that the planet's thick atmosphere, driven by extreme heat and pressure, may have gradually slowed and reversed the rotation through friction over billions of years. The result is that the sun rises in the west and sets in the east on Venus. Combined with the planet's crushing atmospheric pressure (92 times Earth's) and surface temperatures hot enough to melt lead, this backward rotation adds another layer to why Venus is one of the most hostile places in our solar system. It's a reminder that planetary formation involves chaotic processes we're still working to fully understand.
