Lightning Can Travel Upward

Most people assume lightning strikes downward from clouds to the ground, but the reality is more complex. Lightning actually begins when negative charge builds in a cloud base, creating an invisible channel called a stepped leader that moves toward the earth. What's counterintuitive is that the most powerful part of the lightning bolt, called the return stroke, travels upward from the ground to the cloud at roughly one-third the speed of light, reaching temperatures of 30,000 Kelvin, hotter than the sun's surface. This upward return stroke is what we actually see as the bright flash. Tall structures like buildings and trees initiate this upward journey by sending streamers of positive charge upward to meet the descending stepped leader. During extreme thunderstorms, lightning can strike the same location multiple times in seconds. The fastest recorded upward lightning streaks move at speeds exceeding 100 million meters per second. This discovery fundamentally changed how engineers design lightning protection systems for skyscrapers and power infrastructure, since the threat comes as much from the ground pushing electricity skyward as from the sky pushing it down.
