At depths beyond 200 meters, water pressure becomes so intense that it would collapse a human body almost instantly. But some fish thrive there. What makes this possible is that these deep-sea creatures are mostly water themselves. Their bodies contain no air pockets or lungs that could implode. Even more remarkably, some organisms like the dumbo octopus have been filmed at depths exceeding 6,000 meters, where pressure exceeds 600 atmospheres. At those depths, the water itself begins to behave differently, becoming denser and acquiring strange properties. Scientists studying extremophiles at these pressures have discovered organisms with entirely different biochemistry than surface life. Their enzymes work at temperatures near freezing and under conditions that would denature proteins in any shallow-water creature. Understanding how these animals survive has real applications in medicine and materials science.
