
Trees Can Talk to Each Other Underground
Beneath the forest floor, trees are communicating in ways scientists are only beginning to understand. A vast network of fungal threads, called mycorrhizal networks, connects the roots of different trees and allows them to exchange nutrients, water, and chemical signals. When a tree is attacked by insects, it can send warning signals through these fungal connections to neighboring trees, which then boost their own defense compounds before pests even arrive. Douglas fir trees have been observed sending carbon to neighboring hemlocks through these networks, even supporting young seedlings that would otherwise struggle in the shade. Researchers call this system the "wood wide web." The fungi benefit too, receiving sugars from the trees in exchange for improved access to soil nutrients and water. This discovery fundamentally changed how scientists view forests, shifting the understanding from trees as isolated competitors to trees as members of an interconnected community. The network appears most active between trees of different species, suggesting that diversity in a forest strengthens these communication pathways. This finding has practical implications for forestry and conservation, as it shows that removing trees can disrupt these vital underground relationships across entire ecosystems.
