Tarantula babies don’t always leave home… Sometimes they eat it. In species like the Stegodyphus lineatus, the mother prepares a final meal herself. After the eggs hatch, the spiderlings swarm her, dissolving her body and consuming it alive. It’s called matriphagy… and it gives the babies a powerful start. She doesn’t fight back; this is the plan. In the wild, even motherhood can end in sacrifice.
