Your DNA Contains Instructions Written by Viruses

About 8 percent of human DNA comes directly from ancient viruses that infected our ancestors millions of years ago. These viral sequences, called Human Endogenous Retroviruses, or HERVs, got permanently embedded into our genome when retroviruses integrated into reproductive cells. Once locked into the DNA, they were passed down through generations like any other inherited trait. Most of these viral remnants are now inactive, essentially genetic fossils. But some still function. Scientists discovered that one viral gene, called syncytin, plays a critical role in placental development during pregnancy. Without this ancient viral sequence, human reproduction as we know it wouldn't work. It's not that viruses tried to help us, of course. They were simply invaders that got stuck. Over time, our cells repurposed pieces of their code for our own survival. The discovery upended the traditional view of evolution as a clean process of gradual change. Instead, it revealed that our own genetic blueprint contains borrowed code from organisms that tried to parasitize us. Every human alive today carries these viral souvenirs in nearly every cell, a reminder that our biology is far messier and more collaborative with pathogens than we once imagined.
