Your DNA Contains Instructions Written by Ancient Viruses

About 8 percent of the human genome consists of endogenous retroviruses, or ERVs, which are fragments of viral DNA that inserted themselves into our ancestors' genomes millions of years ago. These aren't random junk. Some have been repurposed by evolution to perform critical functions in human biology. One such virus-derived gene called syncytin helps form the placenta during pregnancy, essentially allowing mammals to reproduce the way we do. Without this ancient viral code, pregnancy as humans experience it would not exist. These viral insertions happened when retroviruses infected reproductive cells in our ancestors and their genetic material got permanently woven into the DNA passed down through generations. Most are now harmless, their teeth filed down by time. But occasionally they reactivate or cause problems. Scientists discovered that one endogenous retrovirus contributes to the development of certain cancers when its normal silencing mechanisms fail. The virus became part of us so completely that our cells had to evolve specific ways to keep it quiet. This isn't contamination or infection in the modern sense. It's evidence that our genome is a palimpsest, layered with the evolutionary history of conflicts and compromises between our species and the pathogens that shaped us.
